"Red indicates the presence of Creosote"
The dimensions of this oil screening kit are:
Height 2.75 inches (75 mm), Diameter 1.5 inches (42mm)
What Is OilScreenCreosote® Used For?
This product was developed in response to a request for a fast, inexpensive test that will screen
for Creosote in soil, sand and gravel. In order to provide a maximum visual contrast
against the very dark creosote material this kit has been specially formulated with a fluorescing dye that
works with the red Sudan IV to stain Creosote a fluorescent red.
The OilScreenCreosote field screening test kit is an
inexpensive, simple, and virtually instant qualitative test for identifying the
presence of Cresote in soil. The creosote test kit was designed to overcome the historic
difficulties with field screening tests and was therefore developed according to a very specific set of criteria:
- OilScreenCreosote kit is a "go"/"no-go" presence/absence test
- OilScreenCreosote kit will detect Creosote down to the 500ppm range
- OilScreenCreosote results are immediately available and require
no specialized measurement equipment
- OilScreenCreosote tests have simple, easy to read instructions
and can be used by utility or industrial contractors after a couple of minutes
training.
How Does The OilScreenCreosote Test Kit Work?
Suspected Creosote contaminated soil is added to the sample bottle,
to which potable water is also added and the contents shaken vigorously. A
rapidly dissolving cube (containing oil staining red Sudan IV) is attached to the cap and another cube containing a fluorescing dye is included in the jar.
The Sudan IV highlights the presence of Creosote by turning it a bright
red.
NOTE: The range of detection is approximate because a soil's affinity for oil will
vary.
OilScreenCreosote Does Not Replace Quantitative Field Screening
Tests, However:
During the excavation of contaminated soil, the OilScreenCreosote test kit will
permit rapid assessment of the depth and direction of Creosote in soil, thus
reducing the time and costs typically associated with field screening
methodologies.
NOTE: Esters (detergents) are the only known substance to interfere with the dye s ability to
stain petroleum hydrocarbon products. This may be applicable when screening for Ester based
(i.e. synthetic) motor oils.
Industries That Would Benefit From Using The OilScreenCreosote
Kits Include:
Forestry, environmental, aerospace, shipping/marine, railways, manufacturing,
petrochemical, utilities and construction.
